Master’s thesis
Value Creation in the Changing Funding Landscape of the Performing Arts: A Qualitative Case Study of Talo
Events Ltd’s Private Funding Acquisition Process
MA Thesis · Musicology · 2025
University of Turku · Commissioned by Talo Events · Written in Finnish
How can we secure a sustainable future for arts and culture as public funding becomes increasingly
uncertain? Could private investment be part of the answer? Can performing arts be profitable, and how can
their economic, social and artistic value be communicated to investors?
Commissioned by Talo Events, my Master’s thesis explored these questions through a real funding process
for an arena-scale performing arts production. As part of the production team, I followed the process from
the inside and took part in discussions with investors and finance professionals.
My research highlighted a clear gap between the cultural and investment sectors. A strong financial case
matters, but so does finding ways to communicate the cultural and social value of the arts in terms that
resonate outside the sector. Closing this gap also calls for broader change, from clearer communication
and shared terminology to cultural policy and government-backed funding instruments that can create better
conditions for private investment in the arts.
